Two small music labels have come together to create one of the biggest projects in reggae music history. The labels are Contractor Music out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Amada Recordings out of Atlanta, Georgia in The States. They came together to produce the reggae album The Dj Grid Project, Volume 1. The album Includes tracks from the British pop star Ed Sheeran, Damian and Stephen Marley, sons of the legend Bob Marley, Sean Kingston, Wyclef, Capleton, Mojo Morgan of Morgan Heritage, Jethro Sheeran, the first cousin of Ed Sheeran, and Safaree of Vh1’s love and hip hop. The LP also features two upcoming acts, Katie Bates and the Dream Katchers.
The project was released digitally and debuted on November 17th and shot up to number 7 on the itunes top 100 reggae album Chart. In addition to this Amazon music had the album premier as number 1 on its international rap album and reggae chart.
Contractor Music and Amada Records have now forged a partnership which will see a followup reggae album which includes tracks from all the artists on the first album in addition to tracks from the reggae giants Sizzla, Chronixx and Sean Paul. The partnership will also see new releases from Biggie Smalls, Mary J Blige, and Snoop Dogg who performed live in Jamaica And Contractor Music owns the master recordings of these performances.
The project is the brainchild of Sean 'Contractor' Edwards of the Contractor Music Group and Immanuel Nelson of Amada Recordings in Atlanta Georgia. Contractor came across Amada Recordings while doing marketing and promotions for the Sean Kingston's single "Chance" featuring Vybz Kartel and "Paradise" featuring Safaree of VH1’s love and hip hop TV series.
Amada Recordings is affiliated with the Dj Grid which is a dj pool in the United States that manages hundreds of club and radio dj’s worldwide. Due to the success of the Sean Kingston singles in the states with mainstream radio and club rotation, Contractor decided to work with the Dj grid and Amada Recordings to promote other singles which he was associated with. These include the singles "Pain" with Capleton, Contractor and Bobo Zarro, "Outlaw" with Contractor and Jethro 'ALONESTAR' Sheeran, (cousin of Ed Sheeran) and Million Dollar Cheque with Mojo Morgan, Damian Marley, Stephen Marley and Wyclef. The singles started to do very well and social media lit up. All the artists involved were very pleased with the mainstream attention.
Because of this Contractor decided to combine the forces of radio and club rotation and distribution and he along with Immanuel Nelson of Amada Recordings decided to release the project digitally on itunes and other digital outlets. The project was registered with nielsen soundscan which tabulates all music sales in the united states. The project was released on November 17th 2017 and on its first day of release, it debuted at number 7 on the reggae itunes album charts which exceptional for an independent label.
One of the main reasons Contractor attributes the success of the project was a major social media campaign to purchase the preorders of the album which was led by Amada Recordings. Contractor says “Amada Recordings has an extensive amount of bloggers and followers in their social media network and they all collaborated on the effort to have people buy the project online”, he said. Contractor says that having heavyweight names on the project is also very helpful to its success.
